The Theory of Design

College football is fun to watch. It's fun to root for your team, not a particular running back to get lots of yardage and some receiver to make lots of catches. All that matters is whether your team wins or not, and that's how we designed this game.

As Commissioner of your league, you create a new league on BigNastyFootball.com. You then invite Club Owners (your buddies) to join your league. Each Club Owner creates their private account in BigNastyFootball.com and sets up their Club.

You organize and hold a draft, whereby Club Owners select specific college Teams to comprise their Club. For example, a Club's roster, the Fighting Goobers, may consist of Miami, Michigan, Colorado, Texas A&M, Connecticut, and Memphis.

After your draft is complete, you, as Commissioner enter every Club's roster. Then, before the first live game each week, each Club Owner logs into their account and chooses their starting lineup.

After the live game has played, scores are automatically tallied and reflected in your league's standings page.

Win * 10
Beat an AP/BCS Top 10 Team 5
Beat an AP/BCS Higher Ranked Team 5
Conference Champ Bonus 15
Non-BCS Bowl Invite 5
BCS Bowl Invite 10
45-55 Points For 2
56+ Points For 5
0 Points Against 5
1-9 Points Against 2
* No Bonus Points are awarded for wins against non-FBS teams.

Scoring System

This system is based most importantly on your college teams' victory. There are, however, bonus points awarded for extraordinary performances like beating a ranked team, scoring over 45 points, etc...

The Patsy

In a fun twist, we have taken an average ranking from many national periodicals and come up with "The Patsy List". This is a listing of the 25 lowest ranked teams from all 120 FBS teams.

If enabled by the commissioner, this approach requires that each Club draft one of their allotted roster selections from this list. They MUST start their Patsy every week.

This rule greatly adds to the fun and spirit of your league. When was the last time you cared about the Arkansas State vs. Louisiana-Lafayette game?

Website Features

Club Owners obviously can select their starting lineups each week, or even weeks in advance. They can see the standings of the entire league, and even talk smack on your bulletin board.

If the system option is enabled, Club Owners may make trades. They have the ability to see who is available, and how many points they would have scored had they had that team. They could then choose to drop their undesirable team(s), and pick up a shiny new one.

You, as Commissioner, have the ability to enter prize levels, in $$ amounts based upon however much "funny" money you want to play for. You also have the ability to enter $$ and charge for trades.

The Kitty

"The Kitty" consists of all "monies" that are assessed from trades made over the 12 week regular season. Each week, the club that scores the highest number of points, will be awarded a pro-rata portion of the Kitty at year-end. This generally is not a huge prize, but it's nice to get recognition for doing well in any particular week.

The Cost

The cost of creating an account in BigNastyFootball.com is $15.00 USD per Club.

We are offering a special coupon for 2011. Enter the coupon code of: bignasty2011 to receive 2/3 off of the normal cost of playing. Use of this coupon will reduce the cost to $5.00 for this year.

This guide is primarily for the Commissioner of the league, but might also be helpful for anyone participating in a Big Nasty League.

1) Getting The League Together

As the Commissioner, your first goal is to recruit the people who will make up your league. You will want to send out an email that includes the following information so that potential players will be able to JOIN your league.
  • Web address of www.BigNastyFootball.com
  • LEAGUE ID
  • LEAGUE PASSWORD

2) Setting The Draft

The next item on your agenda will be to set a time to hold your Draft. This event can be one of the more exciting parts of the season. It is your league's opportunity to hold a party where the club owners select their teams. You can hold a Draft Lottery and choose the type of selection process of your choosing. Two important components to know about before holding the Draft are 1) Deciding the number of teams to Draft and the number of teams to Start and 2) Choosing a PATSY - IF your league chooses to play with that rule.

3) Setting League Parameters & Entering Draft Results

An important step The Commissioner will before the season starts is to access the "League Settings" page and set the Number of Teams to Draft and the Number of Teams to Start. How this is set will be influenced by the number of club owners in your league. For example: A league of 12 Clubs, each drafting 7 teams, will be using 94 of the 120 NCAA teams. Because clubs have the opportunity to add/drop teams, your league has control over the number of those available in the pool.

The Number of Teams to Start setting will allow for more options when each club is deciding on their weekly lineup. Having a few extra teams above the amount required to start can be helpful when it comes to bye weeks.

The PATSY - do not worry about this, unless it is set as a rule in your league

The Patsy is an element of The Big Nasty that makes it all a little more interesting. One will obviously begin the draft by choosing those teams that are ranked high and are expected to do well. However, if the rule is enabled, each club owner must also choose AT LEAST ONE team that is ranked in the Bottom 25 - because each week your starting lineup must include a PATSY. So there is an incentive to look for the "diamond in the rough". Can you pick out the under-rated team that is going to be a surprise? Doing so might be the difference in whether or not you win your league.
